Once infamously known as one of the most ferocious and violent enforcers in the game, former NHL player Bill Butters is joining us for lunch to share the story of his life-changing discovery of God. He used to throw fists and sling profanities on the rink, but now he is one of the most respected leaders and honorable men to ever have played, thanks to a new start and a strong relationship with Christ.
Bill’s former coach, the storied Herb Brooks (of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” fame) once said to him, “Butters, right now you’re a character. I hope someday you will have character.”
After hitting rock bottom at the height of his career, he turned to God and transformed. A new man, he shares his story with the youth he coaches, teaching them how to incorporate lessons from the Bible into the rink.
It’s never too late to seek forgiveness for the mistakes you’ve made in the past. Bill believes Jesus is similar to a Zamboni - He fills in the cracks and lets you begin anew.
This is truly a comeback story you can’t miss - a message of faith, metamorphosis, and forgiveness. Register today to hear how you can better your own life with the lesson Bill learned the hard way.
Bill Butters’ hockey career included playing seven years of professional hockey with a number of teams in the NHL and WHA, including: Toronto Maple Leafs, Minnesota North Stars, Minnesota Fighting Saints, Houston Aeros, Edmonton Oilers, and New England Whalers.
He began coaching at Breck High School after retiring from professional hockey, and continued to coach there for five years. He then went on to coach at University of Minnesota (10 years), Bethel College (3 years), and finally his alma mater, White Bear Lake High School (4 seasons).
Bill took a break from coaching and worked with Hockey Ministries International as a missionary to the hockey world. After 13 years, he returned to coaching at the University of Wisconsin (2 seasons) before circling back to Hockey Ministries in 2012.
